"Technics" CD-4 quadraphonic stereo music system model SC-8400DX with "Technics" RS-615 Cassette Deck.
Year : 1974
Long before the days of the 5.1-channel home theater, Compatible Discrete 4, also known as Quadradisc or CD-4 was as a discrete four-channel quadraphonic system for phonograph records.
* (Discrete - multichannel audio or soundtrack being stored with each individual channel isolated from the other tracks).*
The system was created by JVC and Radio Corporation of America (RCA) in 1971 and introduced in May 1972. Many recordings using this technology were released on LP records during the 1970s. This original surround-sound format, which employed four speakers for playback, became popular among analog audiophiles in the 1970s. If you had a quadraphonic rig in your living room , you could set up a pair of speakers in front of you and a pair behind you, then bathe in every single music note from one of the thousands of quadraphonic LP records available at that time.
Since it required special equipment and specially-encoded LP records, and because of the competitive audio format war divided the marketplace, quadraphonic faded out from the market before the 1980s and it was later superseded by digital multi-channel decoders from Dolby and Digital Theater System (DTS) , and also by digital surround formats like SACD(Super Audio CD) and DVD-Audio.
